Future-proofing farms in North West Europe with Smart Carbon Farming

Challenges

Many of today’s standard farming practices deplete the very soil they rely on. With a growing population and more than half the world’s agricultural land already degraded, there may not be enough soil to support global food production within 50 years. 

Carbon farming rewards farmers that store carbon and/or reduce emissions, promoting healthier farming methods like regenerative agriculture that restore soil, rather than degrade it. The approach is key to achieving an economically resilient farming ecosystem in North West Europe and beyond. 

For carbon farming to work as a business model, accurate measurement and verification of stored carbon is key – but currently very costly and difficult. Further barriers related to policy, governance, and access to practical solutions can make it difficult for farmers to explore and implement carbon farming.

Actions

The Smart Carbon Farming project connects 11 partners across 5 countries to drive an inclusive agricultural transition by customising and testing monitoring solutions, aligning policy, research and innovation, and training farmers on the uptake of carbon farming practices.

Smart Carbon Farming is 60% funded by the Interreg NWE program.  AC3A as an associated partner do not benefit of any kind of funding from this project.
