On Thursday, May 13th, we held our 5th ALG-AD webinar to discover the UK pilot site and its facilities. To conclude the cycle of webinars proposed in the framework of the ALG-AD project, we proposed an event on the following topic: “Challenges and results, after 2 years of microalgae production using digestate – The British pilot site”.

This pilot site, attached to the Langage dairy farm and its anaerobic digestion unit, has been cultivating the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus in autotrophy and mixotrophy for 2 years.

We spoke with Darren Oatley-Radcliffe, a chemical and bioprocess engineer at Membranology, who was involved in the design of the digestate pretreatment system at the pilot site and who told us about the PBR technology used at the site, its design, and construction. In the second part, we exchanged Claudio Fuentes Grünewald, researcher at Swansea University who presented us the results of the cultivation and the challenges encountered at this pilot site.
